Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue annulet inscribed in silver "WINGS OF FREEDOM" on the lower half and pierced by a silver arrowhead, point down, with its shaft forming a torch enflamed orange at top center of the annulet; supporting the annulet from beneath a pair of silver wings conjoined with tips pointed up.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are colors traditionally associated with Aviation units.  The blue annulet suggests a prescribed drop zone and the arrowhead piercing it symbolizes the placement of men and material within the zone.  The flaming torch and wings refer to the unit's motto "Wings of Freedom."

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 212th Aviation Battalion on 12 June 1967.  It was redesignated for the 212th Aviation Regiment with the description and symbolism revised effective 17 November 1987.

Azure, an annulet of the like fimbriated Tenn within and abutted in base by a vol Argent, overall in honor point a pheon of the like, the shaft enflamed of the second.

Crest

On a wreath of the colors Argent and Azure, three swords palewise Or, blades Argent, grips Gules detailed Or, interlaced with a palm frond Proper.

Symbolism

Crest

The colors red, yellow and green are adapted from the United States Army's Vietnam Campaign streamer and reflect service in Vietnam.  The unit was awarded three Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm decorations, symbolized by the swords and palm.  The unsheathed swords represent military preparedness and combat service.  The palm denotes honor and achievement.

Background
The coat of arms was approved for the 212th Aviation Regiment effective 17 November 1987.  It was amended to add a crest on 27 February 1989.
